The Pentagon has not publicly disclosed that dozens of U.S. service members were wounded in three Iranian strikes on American bases in Jordan in the days before the July 17 attack that killed two soldiers, according to a New York Times investigation.
While U.S. Central Command issued statements about retaliatory strikes on Iranian military sites following Tehran's attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, those announcements made no mention of the earlier assaults on U.S. installations in Jordan or the resulting casualties. The Defense Ministry subsequently identified the two soldiers killed in the July 17 strike as a 25-year-old man from Hawaii and a 19-year-old woman from Texas.
Since the broader conflict began on Feb. 28, 2026, at least 16 U.S. troops have been killed and hundreds wounded. The Pentagon has also stopped releasing daily tallies of targets struck inside Iran.
