The Jordanian government has denied ordering the evacuation of the international airport and seaport in Aqaba, contradicting a warning from the US embassy that cited a credible and specific threat. Government spokesman Mohamad al Momani said both facilities are operating normally and that Jordanian authorities have recorded no threats, while Jordan has issued no evacuation decision.
The US embassy in Amman said Jordanian authorities had evacuated the airport and port due to a credible threat. The Israeli military confirmed projectiles were launched from Iran toward the Aqaba region.
The conflicting accounts come amid heightened tensions following an Iranian attack on a US air base in Jordan on July 18 that killed two American service members and left one missing. Iran also struck targets in Kuwait and Bahrain in retaliation for US strikes on Iranian territory. A US-Iran memorandum of understanding signed in June has been formally suspended, following the conflict that began with US and Israeli bombings of Iran on February 28.
