Norwegian is considering shifting operations from Copenhagen Airport to Billund in 2027 after what its Danish country chief called a "quite terrible" summer of prolonged passport control queues. Sara Westphal Emborg Neergaard said the airline would not rule out prioritising its presence in Billund at Copenhagen's expense, blaming the airport for admitting too many flights and passengers relative to capacity rather than police staffing.
The congestion, which persisted through May, June and July, emerged in the wake of the EU's new digital Entry/Exit System. Copenhagen Airport traffic chief Samuel Rude acknowledged the criticism and said it was being taken seriously, while communications director Lise Kürstein recognised periods of long queues but disputed the broader characterisation presented by Norwegian.
SAS had previously considered rerouting traffic from Copenhagen to Stockholm Arlanda over similar concerns but never carried out the plan. Mads Brandstrup, SAS communications director, said the feared collapse in processing did not materialise.
