Murder investigation launched after man dies from dog bite in Wakefield

West Yorkshire Police have opened a murder investigation after a 55-year-old man died following a dog bite during an altercation on a footpath in Wakefield on Saturday.

Officers responded to reports of a disturbance on an old train line path off Blacker Lane in Calder Grove shortly after 1:30 p.m. The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition and died shortly after 7 p.m. Police arrested a 55-year-old man on suspicion of murder and of being the owner of a dog dangerously out of control in a public place causing injury. A dog believed to be involved has been seized.

Detective Chief Inspector Michael Cox appealed for witnesses to come forward, particularly two women — one named Sophie — who stopped to assist the victim. The crime reference number is 13260465524.
