Mexico's Sheinbaum to attend World Cup final at Trump's invitation

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum will attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on Sunday after accepting an invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump, her office announced Thursday. Sheinbaum is scheduled to depart Saturday afternoon and return Monday morning.

The championship match between defending champions Argentina and Spain will take place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will also attend, and Trump himself plans to be among more than 80,000 spectators for his only match appearance of the tournament.

Sheinbaum, whose last meeting with Trump took place at the World Cup draw in December 2025, skipped the tournament's opening ceremony in Mexico City and gave her ticket to a young Indigenous woman. Air quality in the East Rutherford area was rated unhealthy on Thursday due to smoke from Canadian wildfires, though meteorologists expect conditions to improve before kickoff.
