A magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck the Phlegraean Fields volcanic area near Naples on Friday evening, the strongest tremor to hit the region in four decades. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said the quake struck at 19:46 local time at a depth of three kilometres, with its epicentre located near Pozzuoli.
At least 21 people were injured, two of them seriously, though other reports placed the toll lower. A section of wall collapsed from a building in Pozzuoli, and fire services received around twenty calls reporting cracks and trapped lifts. Dozens of aftershocks followed the main tremor.
Authorities suspended train and metro services as a precaution, including high-speed rail through Naples. The port of Pozzuoli was closed and ferry services to Ischia and Procida cancelled.
