Wildfires swept across parts of southern Italy on Sunday, forcing the evacuation of tourists by sea along the Gargano coast and halting rail and road traffic in Molise. On the Gargano peninsula, a large fire burning Mediterranean scrub and Aleppo pines near Peschici prompted the evacuation of tourists aboard Italian Coast Guard vessels from beaches between Peschici and Vieste. Firefighting aircraft conducted water drops, and authorities requested a Canadair from Rome. The flames also spread into the neighbouring territory of Cagnano Varano, and the municipality of Peschici opened a primary school to shelter displaced residents. Several roads were closed and bus services rerouted. Further north in Molise, a fire driven by strong winds toward homes along the coast between Termoli and Campomarino suspended train traffic on the Pescara–Bari line and blocked the SS16 highway.
