Rail traffic across much of southern Italy was severely disrupted on July 9 after unknown assailants deliberately cut cables on key lines in Calabria, halting services and prompting widespread cancellations.
The sabotage affected the Tyrrhenian line between San Lucido and Longobardo and the Ionian route between Cutro and Isola di Capo Rizzuto, triggering a suspension of trains from Battipaglia in Campania to Paola in Calabria. Services on the Salerno–Paola, Catanzaro Lido–Taranto, Sibari–Paola and Cosenza–Paola lines were also blocked. Traffic gradually resumed from 8:20 a.m. after replacement buses were deployed during the outage.
Rete Ferroviaria Italiana deployed technicians to repair the damaged infrastructure and restore full operations. Consumer group Codacons reported numerous southbound trains cancelled or heavily delayed as a result of the disruption.
