Iran releases detained US citizen Dena Karari after 19 months in custody

Iran has allowed an American citizen detained since December 2024 to leave the country, ending a case that added to long-running tensions between Washington and Tehran. President Donald Trump announced the release on Truth Social, saying the woman is now safely outside Iran and in good condition.

The woman was identified as Dena Karari, a dual US-Iranian national, who was arrested after visiting family in Iran. She was accused of espionage and collaboration with a hostile state following US and Israeli strikes on Iran in 2025. Karari was not imprisoned but was interrogated multiple times during her detention.

Her lawyer, Jared Genser, confirmed that Karari is now travelling back to the United States. The circumstances of her release were not immediately detailed, as Trump did not elaborate on the terms of the agreement in his social media post.
