Moroccan authorities have released journalist Ali Lmrabet from police custody following a three-day detention that drew international attention to press freedom in the North African kingdom.
The Casablanca public prosecutor ordered the release after reviewing documents and concluding the preliminary investigation, returning two computers, a storage device, and a mobile phone to Lmrabet, who left the judicial buildings in good condition. The French-Moroccan journalist was arrested on Sunday upon arrival at Tangier airport and transferred to Casablanca.
Authorities had accused Lmrabet of spreading false information on social media. The Dutch public broadcaster NOS reported that the Moroccan prosecution confirmed his release but noted he remains a suspect in an ongoing defamation investigation, with "appropriate legal consequences" still possible.
