An Indian-flagged cargo vessel, the MSV Faize Noore Oliya, capsized and sank after being struck by a projectile off the coast of Hodeidah in the Red Sea on Tuesday, 4 August 2026. All 14 crew members — 13 Indian nationals and one Yemeni — were rescued by the Yemeni coast guard and taken to the port of Mokha.
India's Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal condemned what he called an unprovoked attack, while the Indian foreign ministry issued a strong denunciation. Yemen's internationally recognised government accused the Iran-backed Houthi movement of carrying out the strike using an explosives-laden boat. The Houthis have not commented on the allegations.
The incident follows a Houthi-declared blockade on Saudi Arabia's Red Sea ports announced on 20 July. The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency has reported several attacks on vessels in the region over the past week. India's foreign ministry said it is coordinating with Yemeni authorities in response to the sinking.
