India summoned Iran's deputy chief of mission on Monday to lodge a strong protest over cruise missile strikes on two UAE-flagged oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz that killed one Indian seafarer and wounded several others.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it hit and disabled two tankers that allegedly ignored warnings. The UAE defence ministry said the Mombasa and Al Bahiyah were targeted in Omani territorial waters in the strait's southern lane, causing material damage and fires later brought under control. A total of 30 Indian nationals were aboard the two vessels, with one death on the Al Bahiyah and nine injuries on the Mombasa, two of them critical.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reiterated India's call for safe navigation through the strait, noting it is vital for global energy security. He added that Indian seafarers have suffered the highest number of deaths among all nationalities in regional shipping attacks.
