A 55-year-old Greek man has been arrested in Mystras, on the Peloponnese peninsula, after police discovered his father's body in an industrial freezer where it had been stored for two-and-a-half years, allegedly to continue collecting pension payments.
The investigation began after neighbours reported they had not seen the 90-year-old man, who suffered from dementia, for an extended period. The suspect initially told investigators his father was living in Athens, but his sister in the capital contradicted that account, saying she had not seen their father in years. Officers found the remains in the basement of a former hotel converted into housing, alongside an air pistol that prompted a weapons charge.
The man confessed to concealing the deaths of both his father and his previously deceased mother to fraudulently collect their pensions. He faces charges of false testimony, fraud against the state, and weapons violations.
