The European Commission approved €6.1 billion in additional military aid for Ukraine on Monday, funding air defence systems, missiles, ammunition and radars as Kyiv faces intensifying Russian strikes. The announcement coincided with Ukraine's 35th Independence Day.
The new package is drawn from the military component of a broader €90 billion support loan covering 2026 and 2027. It adds to €16 billion in previously approved procurement plans, of which €8.35 billion has already been disbursed. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the bloc was stepping up to help Ukraine defend its airspace amid a worsening Russian offensive.
The urgency was underscored by 376 missile strikes recorded in July alone. Since 2022, the EU and its member states have provided €220.2 billion in total support to Ukraine, including €3.8 billion derived from frozen Russian assets.
