The European Union Council on Wednesday approved Britain's participation in the bloc's €90 billion support loan to Ukraine, opening the way for London to contribute to financing Kyiv's defence and budgetary needs.
The loan, endorsed in December 2025, allocates €60 billion for defence and €30 billion for direct economic and budget support. Ukraine has so far received €8.1 billion, including €3.2 billion in macro-financial aid disbursed on 25 June and €3.9 billion on 30 June for drones. Kyiv is set to receive €45 billion in 2026, split between budget aid and defence.
The European Commission earlier outlined two funding options: using frozen Russian assets or borrowing on international markets. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen backed a "reparations loan" drawn from Russian assets, though Belgium has demanded legal guarantees from EU partners against adverse court rulings.
