The Danish People's Party has received a formal reprimand from its own leadership after failing to field enough lawmakers for a parliamentary vote, handing the government an unexpected majority.
The vote ended 54 in favour to 52 against the government's resolution text on Thursday, a result that materialised because several Danish People's Party members did not attend. The party was expected to present nine of its 16 lawmakers but only six appeared. Group leader Alex Ahrendtsen confirmed the internal dressing-down.
The vote followed an emergency debate on Wednesday, called by the Danish People's Party to address migration flows to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. An opposition resolution drafted jointly with several other parties lapsed once the government's text was adopted.
