Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has ruled out any government plans for a referendum on Denmark's EU justice opt-out, responding bluntly "no" during a parliamentary debate on Wednesday.
The question was raised by Liberal Alliance immigration spokesperson Pernille Vermund during an emergency session prompted by migrant flows linked to the situation at the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. During the debate, Frederiksen described images from Ceuta as "worrying", said Denmark would not hesitate to act if migrant flows move through Europe, and noted that border controls could be significantly tightened within hours. She also expressed strong disagreement with Spain on migration policy.
The rejection contrasts with Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen's suggestion in June that a new vote might be possible. Denmark has held the opt-out since 1993, and voters rejected abolishing it in 2015 by 53.1 percent to 46.9 percent.
