The Czech government has approved a state funeral for Milan Knížák, the prominent artist and former rector of the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague, who died on Sunday at the age of 86. Deputy Prime Minister Karel Havlíček announced the cabinet's decision on Monday, following a proposal by Culture Minister Oto Klempíř.
His widow, Marie Knížáková, confirmed her agreement to the state honours. The farewell ceremony is scheduled for Friday, 7 August in Strašnice, Prague. The Academy of Fine Arts has established a memorial site in his honour.
Cultural institutions are also preparing tributes. The National Gallery in Prague is planning a Knížák retrospective, while the Moravian Gallery in Brno is organising a major retrospective exhibition for autumn 2027.
