Pavel Jungwirth, a prominent Czech physical chemist, died on Thursday at the age of 60. His death was reported on Sunday by Czech public media.
Jungwirth worked at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, where he contributed to research in physical chemistry. He served as chair of the Learned Society of the Czech Republic from 2020 to 2022, leading the country's foremost scholarly organization.
Last year, Jungwirth received the Neuron Foundation's main prize for lifetime contribution to science, one of the Czech Republic's most prestigious research awards. The Prague-based foundation honours scientists whose work has had a lasting impact on their fields.
