Convicted murderer escapes during supervised outing in western Germany

A 44-year-old inmate serving a life sentence for murder fled during a supervised outing in Schmelz, Saarland, on Wednesday afternoon, triggering a police manhunt across western Germany.

The prisoner escaped at around 3 p.m. local time on July 8 during what was his twelfth accompanied release since February 2024. He had been in custody since February 2010 and was convicted of murder by the Saarbrücken regional court in 2011. Police describe the fugitive as approximately 1.92 metres tall, slim, with black hair, a dark moustache, brown eyes, and a tattoo on his left forearm. He was last seen wearing a cream T-shirt, light blue jeans, and white trainers.

Authorities have warned the public not to approach or offer the man a ride, urging anyone with information to contact police immediately.
