German rapper 18 Karat deported to Portugal after drug conviction

German rapper 18 Karat was deported to Portugal overnight following a final court ruling that cleared the way for his removal, the city of Dortmund confirmed.

The Higher Administrative Court of North Rhine-Westphalia rejected an emergency appeal against the deportation order, ruling that the city was entitled to revoke his EU freedom of movement rights and proceed with expulsion. The decision is final and cannot be appealed. A lower court had cited compelling public order grounds for terminating his residency.

The rapper was sentenced in December 2022 to six years and three months in prison for multiple drug offences. Prosecutors suspended further enforcement of the sentence, meaning he will not serve additional prison time in Portugal. However, he faces arrest and the remainder of his sentence should he re-enter Germany.
