South American football governing body CONMEBOL has suspended Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana matches scheduled in Colombia this week after a powerful earthquake struck the country on Monday, killing scores of people.
The Deportes Tolima versus Independiente del Valle Copa Libertadores round-of-16 tie, set for Tuesday, was postponed, along with Wednesday's Copa Sudamericana fixture between Independiente Santa Fe and River Plate. The magnitude 7.4 quake hit near San José del Palmar in northwestern Colombia on August 10, and the Colombian government has declared a national disaster. Death toll estimates range from at least 111 to more than 160.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation sent condolences to the Colombian people and the victims of the disaster.
