Colombian footballers have mobilised relief efforts as the death toll from Monday's magnitude 7.4 earthquake reached 265, with 3,494 injured and 496 missing, according to President Abelardo de la Espriella.
Jhon Arias announced the dispatch of a plane carrying medical supplies and health personnel to Quibdó, near the epicentre in Chocó department, while his wife Alejandra Ayala said they opened bank accounts in Colombia and Brazil to collect donations. Luis Díaz called on compatriots to unite in support of victims, with his foundation collecting non-perishable food, hygiene kits and medical supplies at Barranquilla's Ritz Carlton Hotel. Díaz thanked Latam Airlines for transporting supplies to affected zones.
The quake, the strongest to hit Colombia this century, struck at a depth of 103 kilometres beneath San José del Palmar, causing at least 14 deaths in Chocó and damage across the centre and west of the country.
