Cagliari midfielder Yael Trepy is in intensive care and intubated after nearly drowning in a private pool in Costa Smeralda on Sunday afternoon. The 20-year-old French player was pulled from the deep end of the pool at a villa near Porto Cervo and airlifted to Santissima Annunziata hospital in Sassari for respiratory difficulties.
Cagliari confirmed the hospitalization in an official statement requesting privacy for the player and his family. Trepy reportedly does not know how to swim.
The incident occurred during a rest day following Friday's Coppa Italia match, in which Trepy started in Cagliari's 1-0 victory over Arezzo in the round of 32. Acquired by Cagliari in 2023, he made his Serie A debut last season, scoring an equalizer against Cremonese in a 2-2 draw.
