Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez was booed by his own supporters before kick-off and again upon his introduction during Saturday's 2-2 home draw against Villarreal at the Metropolitano, with fans chanting for him to leave the club.
The Argentina international, who came on in the 66th minute, headed straight down the tunnel after the final whistle instead of joining teammates in thanking the crowd, and had a club scarf thrown at his feet. Head coach Diego Simeone said it was the club's decision to keep Álvarez away from supporters after the match.
The hostility comes amid speculation that Álvarez wants to join Barcelona this summer, with Arsenal also reportedly interested. Atlético's general director Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has denied any possibility of a move to Barcelona, while club president Enrique Cerezo criticised the Catalan club for its conduct. Álvarez, whose contract runs until 2030 with a market value estimated at 120 million euros, remains available for selection with the transfer window open until 1 September.
