Atlético Madrid were held to a 2-2 draw by Villarreal in their second LaLiga match of the 2026/27 season at the Metropolitano on Sunday, surrendering a lead twice before Giuliano Simeone secured a late equaliser in the 85th minute.
Marc Pubill gave Atlético the lead in the 59th minute, but Gerard Moreno levelled from the penalty spot seven minutes later. Robin Le Normand was shown a straight red card in the 76th minute for a foul in the box, and Georges Mikautadze converted the resulting penalty to put Villarreal ahead.
Julián Álvarez was booed by home supporters upon being substituted amid reports linking him with a move to Barcelona. The result leaves Atlético on four points in third place, while Villarreal sit seventh with two.
