Riquelme broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute, converting a first-time left-footed finish from a Cucho Hernández pass to score the only goal of the match. Betis dominated offensively with 18 total shots and seven on target, while Real Sociedad struggled to find an equaliser despite raising their possession to 58 percent in the second half.
The result leaves Betis on three points and fifth in the early standings, while Real Sociedad remain without a point after one match. Both sides had their opening-round fixtures postponed.
