At least seven dead and three missing after tunnel collapses at India hydropower site

· Environment IND

At least seven construction workers have died and three remain unaccounted for after a landslide drove water and debris into an under-construction tunnel at a hydropower project in India's northern state of Uttarakhand.

The disaster struck overnight Thursday at the Vishnugad-Pipalkoti project in Chamoli district, operated by Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited. Officials said 22 people were inside when the collapse occurred; twelve were pulled out alive, while rescue crews are still working to reach the three trapped men.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the site on Friday as teams from the National Disaster Response Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police and fire services deployed to the flooded tunnel, in some cases using makeshift rafts to navigate the inundated sections.
