AMD announced a strategic partnership with Anthropic on Wednesday, investing up to $5 billion in the artificial intelligence company as part of a deal valued at tens of billions of dollars. The chipmaker will supply Anthropic with its latest-generation Instinct MI450 processors, with the first gigawatt of capacity deploying in the first half of next year. The investment is tied to achieving certain deployment milestones, and Anthropic will provide its Claude language models to help AMD improve chip performance.
The agreement follows a similar multi-year deal AMD struck with OpenAI in October, which included a warrant for roughly 10% of the chipmaker's stock. Anthropic will deploy chips both in its own data centers and through cloud providers.
Anthropic has been rapidly expanding its compute capacity. In May, the company secured all capacity at SpaceX's Colossus 1 facility in Memphis for $1.25 billion per month through 2029. The company said its annual run-rate revenue topped $47 billion, up from roughly $10 billion the prior year.
