Anthropic names former Fed chair Bernanke to independent oversight trust

· Technology USA

Anthropic has appointed former Federal Reserve chair Ben Bernanke to its Long-Term Benefit Trust, bolstering the independent body that oversees governance at the artificial intelligence developer.

The trust, established to operate independently of management and shareholders, advises the company on AI development and holds authority to appoint and remove a majority of the board. Bernanke, who won the Nobel Prize in economics in 2022 after leading the Fed from 2006 to 2014, joins as the trust's fourth member alongside Neil Buddy Shah, Richard Fontaine, and Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar.

Trust members do not hold equity in Anthropic and are compensated for their service. The appointment was announced July 9 as the company expands its governance framework amid growing scrutiny of AI safety practices.
