A major incident was declared in north Wales after a wildfire sweeping down Conwy Mountain forced the evacuation of around 60 residents near Sychnant Pass, with the fire front stretching almost a mile across hundreds of acres. Firefighters have battled the blaze since Sunday morning, and one person was taken to hospital.
A second major incident was declared in Derbyshire at Tintwistle Moor, while crews responded to fires across Greater Manchester, County Durham, East Sussex, West Sussex, Devon, Somerset and Greater London. Natural England warned of exceptional fire risk in the South East, London and the Midlands, with most of England and Wales rated very high risk.
The UK is enduring its third heatwave of 2026, a year that has already broken records for days reaching 35°C. Friederike Otto said the climate crisis made the heatwave more likely. Amber and yellow heat health alerts remain in place until Wednesday evening, and hosepipe bans have been announced across parts of southern and eastern England.
