Italian construction group Webuild has secured a €803 million contract to build the central section of Genoa's sub-port tunnel, a project that will create Italy's first underwater road tunnel.
Commissioned by Autostrade per l'Italia, the contract covers Lot B, the most complex segment, running underground beneath the port basin and city fabric. Webuild holds a 90% stake in the venture with Seli Overseas holding the remaining 10%. The full route spans roughly 4.2 kilometres, including 3.4 kilometres of twin parallel tunnels, linking San Benigno in the west to Viale Brigate Partigiane in the Foce district.
Excavation will rely on a tunnel-boring machine nearly 16 metres in diameter, among the largest deployed in Italy. The project is expected to generate more than 700 jobs. Preliminary works on the broader tunnel scheme began in 2024.
