· Society ITA

A Genoa court has sentenced former Autostrade per l'Italia chief executive Giovanni Castellucci to 12 years in prison over the 2018 Morandi bridge collapse, handing down first-instance verdicts on Thursday after prosecutors had sought 18 and a half years for the lead defendant.

Former SPEA executive Michele Donferri Mitelli received an 11-year term and ex-transport ministry official Mauro Coletta was jailed for five years, among sentences imposed on the defendants facing 112 charges tied to the disaster that killed 43 people.

The ruling, delivered around 14:00, concludes a trial that opened in July 2022 and spanned 284 hearings, coming nearly eight years after the viaduct crumbled on 14 August 2018. The replacement San Giorgio bridge opened in August 2020.
