A Turin court has sentenced Giovanni Zippo to 27 years in prison for setting fire to his former girlfriend's apartment with gasoline, triggering an explosion that killed a neighbor and injured several others. The first-degree verdict exceeded the 25-year term sought by prosecutors.

The blast on June 30, 2025, at a building on Via Nizza killed Jacopo Peretti, a fellow resident in his 30s, and left five other people wounded. Zippo doused the apartment belonging to Madalina Hagiu with petrol and ignited it, authorities said.

The Court of Assizes convicted Zippo of voluntary homicide, causing a disaster, and personal injury. The ruling can be appealed.
