Waymo plans to launch a regular driverless ride-hailing service for the public in Munich by late 2027, making the Bavarian capital the Google subsidiary's first city within the European Union. The first vehicles are expected to appear on Munich streets in the coming weeks as the company begins high-resolution mapping and conducts tests with safety drivers.
Waymo is working with Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority and local regulators to secure the necessary approvals. Germany laid the legal groundwork for driverless road traffic in 2021, permitting autonomous vehicle operations in designated areas. Waymo's fleet has logged more than 350 million kilometres without human control and completed over 20 million paid rides across its 11 US markets.
The company has also applied for a licence in the United Kingdom, planning to bring robotaxis to London later this year.
