An approximately eight-metre-long whale appeared in the port of Wismar, Germany, on Monday morning. The harbour authority alerted water police at around 9 a.m. The species had not been conclusively identified, though the environment ministry said the animal appeared vital.
The sighting is the latest in a string of whale visits to the Baltic Sea this month. A humpback whale was confirmed in the Flensburg Fjord on 25 July, and another was seen off Heiligenhafen in mid-July.
The region last drew attention in March when a humpback nicknamed Timmy surfaced in Wismar before washing up dead near the Danish island of Anholt in mid-May 2026.
