A dead minke whale that washed ashore in northwestern Jutland will be removed from a popular beach after wind pushed the carcass toward bathing areas, reversing an earlier decision to let it decompose naturally.
The approximately eight-metre whale was first spotted on June 29 and initially posed no nuisance to beachgoers, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency said. However, several days of wind shifted the carcass further north, where it began disturbing visitors, prompting authorities to order its removal. Work to clear the whale is set to begin Wednesday, with select bones already collected for a museum. The agency has urged the public to keep a safe distance and avoid touching the animal.
The whale will not undergo a necropsy. Its stranding follows a series of cetacean incidents along Danish coasts in 2026, including multiple sperm whales earlier in the year and a humpback whale off Anholt in May.
