Ukraine appeals to CAS against IOC decision to reinstate Russian Olympic Committee

Ukraine's National Olympic Committee has filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport challenging the International Olympic Committee's decision to provisionally lift its suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee. Ukrainian Sports Minister Matviy Bidnyi announced the legal challenge on LinkedIn.

The IOC ended the ROC's suspension on 7 July 2026, a ban originally imposed in late 2023 after Moscow absorbed regional sports bodies from occupied Ukrainian territories. The reinstatement is aimed at paving the way for Russian participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The dispute follows a gradual easing of restrictions. Russian and Belarusian athletes competed as neutrals at both the Paris 2024 and Milan-Cortina 2026 Games, while individual federations have recently begun readmitting athletes under their own flags. Russia has meanwhile launched its own CAS case against the world athletics governing body.
