Hamish Falconer has been appointed as Prime Minister Andy Burnham's top EU negotiator, tasked with pursuing a deeper relationship with the bloc covering services, mutual recognition of qualifications, and visa-free travel for British workers. The next UK-EU summit, originally proposed for July before Keir Starmer's resignation in June, may now be delayed until October to give Falconer time to prepare.
Talks remain deadlocked on several fronts. A youth mobility scheme is stalled over UK reluctance to let EU students pay lower domestic fees, while the UK's participation in a €150bn European defence fund collapsed last November after disputes over pricing. Falconer has reiterated the government's commitment to manifesto red lines, ruling out rejoining the customs union, single market, or accepting free movement.
Meanwhile, former Conservative MP Nick Boles has drawn up a plan proposing Britain rejoin the single market in exchange for extending nuclear and military protection across Europe. The proposal, which includes a
