Typhoon Bavi slammed into China's eastern Zhejiang province overnight, prompting the evacuation of more than 1.7 million residents as authorities activated emergency flood-response protocols across multiple provinces. The storm, which made landfall early Saturday, triggered an orange typhoon warning from China's National Meteorological Centre, with officials allocating 40 million yuan in relief funding.
The storm's toll mounted across the region: 17 people died in the Philippines, mostly in landslides driven by heavy rains. Bavi, classified as a violent typhoon with gusts exceeding 200 km/h, earlier struck Okinawa, where power outages affected dozens of homes and more than 270 flights were cancelled, mostly on All Nippon Airways.
Japan's deputy chief cabinet secretary Masanao Ozaki reported no casualties or housing damage in Okinawa before the system advanced toward the mainland.
