Typhoon Bavi brought heavy rain and powerful winds to Japan's southern islands before sweeping across Taiwan, where it injured 113 people, including five foreign nationals, with no fatalities reported. More than 1.100 domestic and international flights were cancelled and nearly 70.000 households temporarily lost power as the storm lashed the island with winds of up to 144 km/h and gusts around 180 km/h. Taiwan's Central Weather Administration warned of extreme rainfall and dangerous waves reaching 10 metres. Across the island, 14.605 residents were evacuated, with Hualien County accounting for the largest share.
The storm has since weakened while tracking toward China's east coast, where landfall is expected on Sunday. In the eastern Chinese city of Wenzhou, 1,7 million people have left their homes, while more than 100.000 were evacuated in Beijing. Separate severe weather across China has killed 39 people, including 26 after a dam breach.
