Two students, including the suspected gunman, were killed Tuesday when a Grade 7 pupil opened fire inside a classroom at a high school in the southern Philippine city of Zamboanga. The shooting took place on the campus of Ateneo de Zamboanga University's affiliated high school, witnesses and local officials said.
Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso told DZMM radio that both casualties were students and that the attacker had used what he described as a high-powered firearm. University president Ernald Andal confirmed the shooting had ended and that no further injuries or deaths had been reported. Regional police spokesperson Shellamie Chang said officers were working to secure the school campus.
School shootings remain rare in the Philippines but are not unprecedented. In June, a separate attack at a public high school in the central city of Tacloban left at least three students dead and roughly 20 wounded after two students opened fire on campus.
