Thousands protest mass tourism and housing crisis in Mallorca town of Sóller

Up to 2,500 people marched through the Mallorcan town of Sóller on Friday to protest mass tourism and the island's deepening housing shortage, in the latest of a series of demonstrations across the Balearic Islands.

Organised by Moviment Jove de Sóller and Menys Turisme, Més Vida under the slogan "Sóller, at its limit," the rally came two weeks after a large demonstration in Palma that ended in police charges. Authorities estimated about 1,000 participants in Sóller, while organisers put the figure higher. The procession passed without incident, though it forced the closure of terraces and markets along the route.

A manifesto read at the rally demanded action against tourism overcrowding, property speculation, and pressure from boats in Sóller's port. Organisers also condemned the arrest of two young women in Santa Maria for vandalising an estate agency and denounced what they called police brutality during the Palma protest.
