Protesters block Austria's Fernpass road; feared traffic chaos in Bavaria fails to materialise

A citizen initiative blocked the Fernpassstraße (B 179) in Austria's Tyrol region on Saturday morning, drawing up to 1,000 demonstrators at two locations in the Reutte and Imst districts. The full closure began at 9:45 a.m. and was lifted at noon, organisers said. Protesters were rallying against the so-called "Fernpass package" put forward by the ÖVP–SPÖ state government, demanding action against what they describe as excessive transit traffic through the alpine corridor.

Despite the demonstration falling on the first weekend of summer holidays in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, the feared traffic chaos in neighbouring Bavaria did not materialise. Congestion on major motorways remained within typical weekend levels, with delays of 50 minutes to an hour on routes from Munich toward Salzburg and on the Tauern Autobahn toward Villach.
