A 34-year-old former Swedish Armed Forces IT consultant has been sentenced to psychiatric care with special discharge review for attempting to pass classified information to Russian intelligence, a Swedish court ruled Wednesday.
The man, identified as R.T., worked as a consultant for the military between 2018 and 2022 and travelled to Moscow in late 2025, where he contacted the Federal Security Service and the Main Intelligence Directorate, offering secret documents in exchange for protection and Russian citizenship. He was convicted of attempted espionage and two counts of harassment. A forensic psychiatric evaluation found he suffers from a serious mental disorder, and he has denied the charges.
The Swedish Security Service, which investigated the case, has identified Russia as the principal threat to Sweden, which joined NATO in 2024. A separate investigation into alleged conspiracy to commit murder remains ongoing.
