A Madrid provincial court has ruled that Begoña Gómez, wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, will stand trial before a popular jury on charges of influence peddling and embezzlement of public funds, upholding the indictment issued by investigating judge Juan Carlos Peinado.
The panel dropped charges of corruption and misappropriation, narrowing the case that opened in April 2024. Gómez's aide Cristina Álvarez will also face trial for embezzlement. The court lifted precautionary measures including a travel ban and periodic check-ins, returning Gómez's passport. A trial date has not been set.
The General Council of the Judiciary opened disciplinary proceedings against Peinado on 22 June 2026.
