A Madrid judge has ordered Begoña Gómez to prove she used her passport solely to attend her daughter's graduation ceremony in London, giving her a five-day deadline or face potential charges of breaching a precautionary measure. Judge Juan Carlos Peinado issued the demand Monday after Gómez returned her passport on Sunday afternoon. No entry or exit stamps appear in the document for the authorised travel dates. Judge Antonio Viejo had permitted Gómez to travel to London between July 8 and 10 but denied her request to accompany Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to a NATO summit in Ankara.
Peinado had ordered Gómez's passport confiscated on June 20, citing flight risk, while simultaneously sending her to jury trial on four alleged offences including influence peddling, business corruption, misappropriation, and embezzlement of public funds.
The Provincial Court of Madrid is due to review the jury trial decision on Monday, while the General Council of the Judiciary has ordered an assessment of whether Peinado committed a serious disciplinary infraction with the June 20 ruling.
