Lawyer testifies on alleged plot to interfere in Spanish judicial cases

A lawyer for former police commissioner José Manuel Villarejo testified Thursday that an intermediary offered to arrange meetings with Spain's attorney general to challenge what she called an unfair prosecution, though no such meetings ever took place.

Antonio José García Cabrera told the National Court that Leire Díez proposed setting up a meeting with then-Attorney General Álvaro García Ortiz on Villarejo's behalf, but neither he nor his client met with prosecutors. The testimony is part of Judge Santiago Pedraz's investigation into an alleged scheme to disrupt judicial proceedings affecting the government and the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party, reportedly coordinated by Díez and led by Santos Cerdán.

Civil Guard investigators say Juan Manuel Serrano worked closely with Díez to destabilise cases implicating the party, with a pivotal April 2024 meeting at party headquarters in Madrid. Messages cited in the probe show Díez writing that she and Serrano were working to "politically kill" their targets while seeking to aid Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez during his brief reflection period on whether to remain in office.
