Spain wins second World Cup as Gaza crowds rally behind La Roja

Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time on July 19 to claim a second FIFA World Cup title, denying Argentina a consecutive championship after its 2022 triumph.

Thousands of Palestinians gathered in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza to watch and celebrate the Spanish victory, cheering for La Roja amid the ongoing war. The support stems largely from Spain's vocal criticism of Israel's military campaign in Gaza and gestures of solidarity by players such as Lamine Yamal, whom an Israeli defence minister accused of inciting hatred after he raised a Palestinian flag — a charge Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez defended him against.

The screenings carried a heavier note this year: Mohamed al-Wahidi, an aid worker who organised World Cup viewings in Gaza, was killed by an Israeli strike in early July, weeks before the final.
