Spain forward Nico Williams provided the decisive header assist for Ferran Torres's 106th-minute winner in extra time as Spain captured the World Cup on Sunday in the United States, Mexico and Canada tournament.
Williams, who overcame pubalgia and an adductor injury during the competition, had a first-half goal disallowed for a prior foul and was substituted by Álex Baena in the second half. After the final whistle at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, he gave his winner's medal to his mother María Arthuer, saying she "deserves it more than I do" because she fled Ghana in 1994, crossing the Sahara to reach Spain.
His brother Iñaki Williams posted a public tribute to Nico on social media following the victory.
